New Mexico (N.M.) amended its Constitution, Article 2, Section 6 to recognize the citizen’s right to bear arms. Article 2, Section 6 reads: “No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes, but nothing herein shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons. No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms.” N.M. does not mandate a state permit to purchase a rifle, shotgun or handgun. Under N.M. Statutes Section 30-7-9, a N.M. resident can purchase firearms from states that are contiguous to N.M.. Also, a citizen of states contiguous to N.M. is permitted to purchase firearms from N.M..
