According to Article 1 Section 26 of Alabama Constitution every citizen of Alabama has a right to bear arms in defense of oneself and the state. Hence, a permit is not required to purchase long guns and handguns in Alabama. Under Code of Alabama Section 13A-11-58(b), an Alabama resident who legally purchases rifles, shotguns, and ammunition in any state where the purchase is legal may take delivery of the weapons either in that state where they were purchased or in Alabama. Whereas, under Section 13A-11-58(a), any person who purchases firearms or ammunitions from an Alabama resident authorized to sell and deliver firearms may take or send the purchased firearm out of Alabama or have it delivered to his or her place of residence. According to Section 13A-11-63 (a), a person who obtains short-barreled rifles or short-barreled shotguns in Alabama is considered guilty of a Class C felony.
